How do you use the sewing eye tool on a Swiss army knife? I have a Victorinox Swisschamp and obviously i know it has something to do with sewing but my question is what exactly and how do you use? I have always been curious about this. please help.

UNCOLA replied: "You insert the flexible wire loop through the eye of the needle, then put the thread through the large loop then pull the loop back through the eye with the thread. Viola! Needle threaded."

Should I get a Swiss Army Knife or a multi-tool like the Leatherman Wave? I do not need it for my occupation. I'm a male in my 20s. I'd use it for hiking/camping, mostly. I also may use it as a stop-gap replacement for a full set of tools at times. (I'm an expat that moves a lot, and can't lug around a toolbox. I say "may" because I might be moving back to the U.S. soon and would have more tools.) Thanks!

chris w replied: "I am a "Wave" owner and highly recommend it. I use it at work and play as I am a maintenance engineer for a large building complex. I am constantly chased down for quick repairs on stuff and the "Wave" is a major time saver. There are other brands, Gerber for one, but I am as said a happy "Wave" owner buy one today!"

Jeff P replied: "Definitely the leatherman. You cant go wrong with that!!"

Guerrilla Sauce replied: "Both. I'm a strong believer everyone should carry a pocketknife (it will stop them asking to borrow mine!); they come in useful for all sorts of things and make life just that little bit smoother :-) Something like the Victorinox Alox Farmer should last for ever, looks very nice, and can be picked up fairly cheaply. They're slim and light for carrying in a pocket, and there's also some nice looking leather belt cases for them. Plus, they're legal to carry just about everywhere (a concern if you move around a lot and might not be aware of the local laws). It won't, however, do everything a bigger, heavier Leatherman style tool will. If you're going to go Leatherman, I'd spent a bit more and buy the Charge (same tool set as the Wave, but better quality materials). Victorinox also make a very good multi-tool that's about the same size, but lighter; the SwissTool Spirit. I'm not alone in thinking the build-quality is slightly better than a Leatherman, but the Charge design/materials are more appealing... just another option to think about. I find the Leatherman style tools are a bit big/heavy to carry all day everyday and instead keep a larger tool (a Victorinox SwissTool X, with the Surge being the Leatherman option) in my bag that goes with me just about everywhere (also has waterproof clothes, sunglasses, gloves, first aid kit and stuff in... things you might need away from home, but most people rarely take). I just leave it in the car whenever I go anywhere, so I don't have to carry it, but it's not far away if I need anything from it."

Could it be argued that the carrying of a swiss army knife, is infact the carrying of a tool, and not an? offensive weapon as such. Given its myriad of uses, who is to say that the carrier was not intending to open a bottle of beer or cut his toe nails, rather than have an intention to break the law?

P'tang Ole Biscuitbarrel replied: "anything with a blade over 3" is illegal"

BikinInsPecToR replied: "gotta be under 3inches then ur fine no one can give u any shit unless u go on a plane cuz well they cant be too careful u know or school"

Elizabeth replied: "While a swiss army knife is a tool (you'd have a hard time killing someone with one) you cant bring them to school or on an airplane i dont really see how it could be an offensive weapon what with it folding in or getting dull all the time"

Brian C replied: "I have a Swiss Army knife and it takes me about 30 seconds just to find the right tool ! Any potential victim of my murderous intentions would be long gone while I was fumbling about,or I could ask him/her if they had a horse that needed a stone removing from its hoof."

Mike S replied: "I don't know of anywhere that outlaws a swiss army knife. the smallest restriciton I have seen was 2.5", and I know of a few states that allow all knives to be carried. I also consider all knives tools, and a very useful one at that. Would I use one as a weapon? if it's all I had. same with a hammer, screwdriver, crobar, or chair. They're all tools unless I need one as a weapon."

joan k replied: "Yes I would class it as a tool. It's not the sort of thing a knife weilding yob would use I don't think."

JZD replied: "Nice argument, but ultimately doomed, I'm afraid. The offence is in carrying (or possessing) a 'bladed instrument' in excess of the legal maximum length. Whether the item in question can also remove stones from horses hooves (always handy) is not relevant. Similarly your intention, or lack of it, to use the blade offensively is equally not relevant to the commission of the offence."

What are the functions of the hook, reamer/punch tools in a Swiss Army Knife? I have a Victorinox brand one, and I have no idea what I am supposed to use these two for.

archerdude replied: "The "hook", as you call it, is most likely the bottle-opener, used on bottles with a press-on cap (bottles with a cap that has those sharp ridges all around the bottom). If your pocketknife has the type of "hook" seen on this pocketknife& it can be used to carry twine-wrapped packages (the knife is used as a carrying handle). The reamer/punch can be used for leather-working (poking holes in leather, so you can insert the lacing/stitching), or widening a hole in sheet metal. It can be used to make holes in almost any hard-to-work material (like rubber, sheet metal, leather, etc); I've used this type of reamer/punch for wood-working, too."

If you had to cut your arm off like that hiker guy who did it, which tool on a Swiss Army knife would you use? The toothpick? Those little tweezers? Philips Head screwdriver? Can opener? There really was a guy who ended up doing this because his arm got crushed from a rockslide, and he would have died if he had not cut his own arm off to go get help. No one would have found him till he was dead. Now THAT'S GOTTA be the toughest guy EVER.

Chi Sox Fan replied: "I think i would use the... Knife part...."

Jesus Air Freshener replied: "the corkscrew"

7th avalon replied: "the saw...dang that would hurt."

Matt replied: "Ummm the saw tool is the only thing that is capable of cutting through bone."

69 trophystile replied: "The chain saw that i carry in the woods, but if i was camping,i'd just blow it off with my gun."

Jessie O replied: "Oof , Sounds Painful tbh so id pick screwdriver"

Ima Lichencock replied: "I think I would have to go with the fingernail clippers. I've used toenail clippers that I swear would cut through bone. So if they are a good, sharp pair I would use those."

zandanjos replied: "For me, it's a toss-up between the wire-stripper and the magnifying glass. I'm going with the magnifying glass. I'd use the suns' rays to direct the heat into a pinpoint beam that would burn through the tendons and bone, cauterize it, and reduce the chance of infection by burning the bacteria."

just me replied: "I would have to use my big blade and yes that has got to be the toughest guy ever."

Extreme dog lover replied: "I would use the knife...why fool around with the other gadgets...I mean honestly, it wouldn't make sense"

replied: "I'd use the spoon or the fork. Hey, you're gonna be hungry after waiting in the woods for so long. Why waste fresh meat? Plus, you don't want a Grizzly bear sniffing around."

Bestest Mommy In The World! replied: "i would chew it off...just like i almost had to after the gorgeous guy i picked up at closing time scared me the next morning."

Why is it so difficult to pull out the tools in a Swiss Army Knife? or is it just because I don't know how to use it? Please help.

Pop D replied: "You just have to be smarter than the knife."

novangelis replied: "Put WD40 on the hinge ends."

Lisa replied: "maybe for safety reason they made it hard to open, so that small children wouldn't be able to open it and hurt thems shelfs. as for me i still can't pull out tools from an army knife"

rockandroll58-79 replied: "When the Swiss Army Knife is new the blades are hard to pull out at first, so pull all of the blades out and drop a litle WD-4 oil in the body of the knife and let it soak for a little bit and it should help loosen the blades."

Can a Swiss Army Knife be used as a weapon? I was wondering that is the swiss army soldiers were the first to use swiss-army-knives, may be they would use them not just as a survival multi-tool... but may be as a hand-to-hand combat weapon too?

Troy B replied: "It can be used a weapon, but a Navy SEAL knife or M16A2 bayonet is better."

hunnynutbusta replied: "Yeah you could kill somebody with a swiss army knife, but I reckon any real soldier would also be carrying a combat knife such as a KA-BAR, even those crazy swiss."

Dust replied: "Sure, even though most kinds have scissors, screwdrivers, bottle and cork openers, etc..Still just like you said it's a survival tool, and if there is an enemy in front of you then using it would be a good idea, especially the knife. If you don't have anything better to use around."

warmstr426 replied: "Even closed it can be a weapon (small weight in your fist plus it reduces the compression of your fist resulting in more force). A weapon can be anything. Think Alien when the robot rolled up a magazine and nearly killed Ridley, if a magazine can be a weapon then anything can be!"

atomicdogtko replied: "Simply put 'Yes!' It has a blade and it will cut."

Buckeye Bill replied: "....if you have to resort to using a Swiss Army knife to kill in combat you my friend are probably already dead."

PVT Lake replied: "I'd rather use a titanium spork causes more damage"

Another MP replied: "Yes, it can be used as a hand-to hand combat weapon."

Stefan replied: "In the Swiss Army the "Swiss army knife" is not intended to be used as a weapon. It is just a practical multi-tool. The soldiers are equipped with bayonets as well which are a much more effective weapon than a army knife."

How many tools are on the latest swiss army knife? and how many uses are there for these tools Guess how many! My source says 87 tools with 115 uses. A great Christmas present for someone that has few uses.

D TRAIN replied: "good question, I have no idea. dd"

Luck Dragon (UK) replied: "alot"

InspirAsian Book of Secrets replied: "20 at least.."

hate goro n karo chodus replied: "Enough to satisfy you all round?"

mad pathos replied: "the latest models just have the blade"

willhobe replied: "24 and 6 realistic situations where you'll use one."

katy replied: "Well, there's this one with 85 tools, at the cost of $999.99. What a bargain!"

jeenious replied: "not enough I haven't seen the swiss army knife featuring a universal remote control, mini-trampoline, laser pointer, magic 8 ball, blender, mp3 player, slinky, and garage door opener yet."

VelvetRose replied: "Funny enough I saw one the other day in the tool section area of the local store I go to, and I wouldn't have noticed it except that it had a mini torch on it! This is new I think I haven't seen that before. That would be pretty handy though! The latest i could find had 85 tools on it. There is a cutley set, screw driver, fish scaler, can opener, a cap lifter, a wire bender, a toothpick, tweezers and a keyring loop and so much more."

How Do i sharpen my swiss army knife?? I dont want to damage it is thee any special tricks/ tecquniques i need to know. And what tools should i be using. thanks

hello! replied: "Get a knife sharpener at a warehouse store or whatever"

Joe S replied: "I would use a wet stone, lubricated with oil."

Jose B replied: "i sharpen my knifes with another knife."

Jim W replied: "Check the "Scary Sharp" website. Any steel sharpened this way is sharp, and only a few minutes on a blade."

DICK R replied: "you can use a wet strone or you can do like i do use a old letter beltwith oil on it to sharpen your knife."

skeptical replied: "Look for a Lansky system. THAT will get your knife scary sharp!"

If you could only utilize one hand tool for your entire life what would it be and why? This is an excercize to see who you are as a person, so try not to use multi-use tools (swiss army knife, leatherman), because it really doesn't say much. For me: I would say a pen.

bmwr606 replied: "a bowie knife"

yyyyyy replied: "yeah, but what if it runs out of ink?"

the old dog replied: "A pencil, I'm always making mistakes and changing my mind and a pen is indelible, where as a pencil mark can be erased. As well, it is a tool that molds the form of my drawings better than a pen."

bcat replied: "Hammer. Knock some sense into myself."
